The Violet Hour Book Reviews

I love books. A year ago I started my indie kick and I still haven't been able to shake it nor do I ever want to <3

So, so, so good!

Games of Fire - Airicka Phoenix

So first and foremost, when i went into this book i was under the impression that it was paranormal because the side thing over there ---> says someone put it under paranormal/fantasy, well its not. But don't let that stop you from reading this because i am usually strictly paranormal reader and i loved this book. Usually compt. fiction makes me feel really bored after awhile, it was not the case here and if you are the same as me then i promise you won't get bored!!!

Okay now to the regular reviewin'

Song choice! "Make You Feel My Love" by yes Adele. Sue me. I love her and i will openly admit that always. And obviously this reflects the love in the book.

Kay first thoughts, even though i sort of already did some..well whatever. I thought that it was really good but i don't have a lot of experience in this area on whats the norm, and what nots, but from my limited experience ... hmm i am trying really hard to think of a normal compt. fic that i have read lately and i am drawing a blank... well then. moving on....

Plot: I thought that the strongest part of this book was that it was amazingly paced. I totally breezed through this, i was actually getting kind of annoyed at work today because every time i had a costumer i was at a really good spot and i had to stop and help them, UGH PEOPLE! DON'T YOU KNOW I AM TRYING TO READ! Well anyways the voice of the MC caught me right away, i started the sample on amazon didn't even get to the second page before i was closing the sample and buying the book! I am going to talk about characters later so :p. Anyways the plot: like i said it is really well paced. I liked that this wasn't a love triangle, and that the characters were very upfront from the beginning. I loved that this book had a slight switch in POV those few moments omgod, i was bouncing up and down because i was sooo excited, but mostly because i am sadistic. Unfortunately i had this figured out at the beginning at least i was pretty damn sure i was right.... but i didn't stop me from a)wanting to know that i was right b) seeing the relationship between Sophie and Spencer develop.
Oh i should talk about that, i liked it. The tension between them - omgod! i don't think that i have squirmed that much in a book in quite sometime. I just wanted them to angry kiss all the time. I loved them, together and separate. And on that note lets talk about characters!
Oh but before i do! Talk about steamy moments! HOT HOT HOT, WITH A CAPITAL "H" "O" AND TWO "T"S
hehee but those are only make-out sessions, no super steamy sex scenes sorry kids!

Characters:

Sophia (Sophie): Like i mentioned before i loved her voice! one of her first lines and one of my favorites: "What her mother really meant was, let's make sure our new neighbors aren't serial killers or worse salesmen!" That is just a little taste of this sarcastic Blondie. She is a really fun character to follow, i liked her also because she was well rounded. She could be bold and unflinching, to meek and nervous. She kept me guessing but always i liked her. She only made me mad once, and okay its a personal belief in my case - and she shares it too: No cheating. That's that. And i understand that it is explained but she defends someone that cheated, no not Spencer i promise but i got really mad that her then i wanted to slap her. But i am letting it go... maybe... no i am not i am holding onto this grudge for just a little while longer...maybe forever we shall see. Anyways Sophie: awesome. loyal. sweet. A great Main character!

Spencer: God at first i hated him, like legit hated him. I wanted to throw him across the room, then kick his tattooed ass! His ass isn't tattooed...well as far as i know...Anyways....But then we find out why, and i start to understand. then he starts to change before our very eyes. He tries, and he succeeds. And i have fallen in love, because Sophie has fallen in love. They have things that bring them closer to each other in a shorter amount of time but it is obvious that they care about each other, with that said it did go a little fast for me hence the four stars, but i honestly can't tell you that i am an expert on this kind of stuff because i am not, i even get annoyed with my awesome supernatural books with the soulmate rule because its like BAM i love you. and i am like wait what? We don't get to see them fall in love? Well how rude! But now thinking back there were moments when these kids really do show you how much they care. Okay back to Spencer, he is protective and sweet, not overly possessive but a flirt and HOTT

The best friends! Lauren and Jessie: I loved them, especially Lauren she had amazing one liners that had me laughing out loud and slapping my friend who was sitting next to me as i read it, and i would read the line out loud to her and start laughing all over again. Of course my friend thought i was crazy but its okay, i thought it was funny. Jessie is sweet but her character confused me sometimes because she would have these moments were she was very Lauren like and i was like wait i thought you were the shy, innocent one? but then i thought to myself...it's always the quiet ones... hehe okay but yeah i liked them and aside from those few odd moments with Jessie they had their own personalities and didn't get forgotten in the progression of the story.

Villain: those brief POV shifts were creepy, sadistic, possessive, and OMGOSH every SINGLE ONE of them made me super giddy because i am crazy and i loved how cra-cra they were! OMGOSH probably some of my favorite moments were in those moments again its really because i am sick sick person

So my last piece of advice: if you are a paranormal fan and you stumbled across this thinking it was paranormal, then find out its not, it is still worth your time, and you should really read this. If you are a compt. fiction fan - hardcore then all i can say is that i loved this and i thought it was really well written, had an amazing relationship and it was good, good good! So read it.

Once you go Airicka you never go back

Touching Smoke (Touch Saga) - Phoenix , Airicka

I am honestly not sure why the first time i read this book i have it a 4 star rating when it was so deserving of a five, and i didn't write a review because i didn't really write reviews when i read this the firs time. So here is my chance yay! I chose to re-read this because a) the second one is coming out soon, b) i read this like the same time i was reading another book and i was getting the two confused, i even think the names were similar in both books so it didn't help. So i wanted to re-read this and give it a proper review, and also remind myself what it was all about.

So without further ado song choice....huh...thought something would come to me... i will think about it for a little bit and come back this (if i don't you know why, because i am unbelievably forgetful) i think one song i would pick because this book is in deserving of more than one, anyways one song would be "Little Drop of Poison" by Tom Waits, for some many reasons. And for another song choice to "describe song wise" the relationship between Fallon and Isaiah would be "I Need You Love" By Calvin Harris featuring Ellie Goulding (if you don't know Calvin Harris, he does the same thing as David Guetta and if you don't know him, they write the songs, and do the music while in this case Ellie sings the song ta-da!) So think that is what i chose song wise.

Kay first quick thoughts: It was amazing, from the sarcastic, but hilarious Fallon who is the narrator of the book, to the never-ending action, to the heart-breakingly beautiful romance, to the twist and turns that will have you wondering if you have made a complete circle or if you are in the totally opposite direction than you started at. Its that little treasure you will be glad you stumbled across.

Plot: Like i mentioned in my first thoughts it was never-ending action, and what i mean that is that something is usually always going on, maybe it car chases, or getting new information, or falling in love with the characters. It is a well paced book that will keep you up all hours of the night even if you have read it once before...not speaking from experience or anything, and it will have you craving to finish it because you finally succumbed to sleep, in the morning. I remember the first time i went into this book, my first thoughts were angels, i am not sure, i can't even tell you why i thought that the second time i went into it, i was like this was about angels right? NO, i am just stupid, it is a bit of a mystery for the book, but i will give you that, no its not angels, should that stop you from reading it? GOD no if it does you have some serious problems with obsessions and angels. Again like i already mentioned it is very twisty and turny all from the beginning to the end, when you think you figured it out, you haven't so stop trying Airicka (the author) will get ya every time. EVERY - DAMN - TIME. i mean...no i meant that. (don't get me wrong i LOVE it when that happens but second time around, and my jaw is still dropping because i am thinking, how the hell could i ever forget that? well again mostly me reading books at the same time equals bad decision). The plot will keep you going that is for sure, but this book is amazing all around so it isn't the only reason that you will find yourself drooling all over yourself.

Characters!

I just want to say something, as a reader...and reluntantly admitting this a creative writing minor, there is nothing i love more than first person narrative, i don't know why i love to read or write it but i do, so with that said, one of the biggest things i hold dear when either writing or reading is the voice of any character, but particularly if it is first person narrative, i pay close attention. with that said let me tell you about Fallon and my feelings on her.

Fallon: I ABSOLUTELY LOVED HER. She had this very strong voice, and character style that couldn't be denied even in the hard times. i loved that she remained true to the type of character she started off with and didn't start to fade away when it seemed like the plot wanted to take over the story, which is by no means a bad thing, just a lot of times it seems when that happens the characters lose that extra somethin' somethin' they started out with. But not Fallon she said true to her strange amazing, self? i guess is the best way to put it. She is that great mixture of strong, but also compassionate, stubborn, she is willing to learn to fight her own battles is something that i love in my MC, its all great having an already kickass character but i want to see them get there, and i think we will be seeing a lot more from Fallon. I can't even describe how much i liked her, if the story ever tried to get a little slow, which for me it never did, Fallon would/could/possibly did? pick the story right back up and kept us going. She was curious and demanding, but i don't blame her. She is scared, again how can you blame her? But through all these times she keeps with her amazing wit usually i don't post quotes but for this book i am, one of a favorite line from Fallon would be:

"You're not some overtly cliche like a vampire or werewolf, are you? Because I have to be honest, I won't be impressed." ... "I think I would have lost all respect for you if you had been."
So Fallon? A+++ for me, she makes the book good on her own, just like the plot would have been good all of its own, but together its like bliss, but guess WHAT it gets better! OH yes it does.

Isaiah: Holy Hot Male! First time we meet him, motorcycle, and black leather, if that isn't enough to make you fall in insta-love, nothing would...just kidding! because he is just that amazing that he will win your heart with only with this piercing blue eyes (blues happen to be FAVORITE) then his mysterious air, but protectiveness will. He doesn't offer a lot at the very beginning but its obvious how much he cares for Fallon, and that he would do anything to protect her, and talk about swoon-worthy. He is more than that he is like this mixture of total BA, but also sort of in a very strange way innocent, like i just get that vibe him a lot. Though he is serious a lot he does have his playful moments, and he does say the sweetest things! such as...

"We belong just like everyone else and you, you belong more than anyone else." ... "I know you. You're perfect." SWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNN

Villain of book: Equals fan-freaking-astic! i loved him, he was just enough cra-cra for me in a YA book, i mean they all could just take that extra step in all books but this book DID NOT need to take that extra step, this dude was crazier than crazy but also kinda of a genius, so i don't even think i can be mad at him? its a little upsetting how much i almost want to respect the dude.

So the ending, will keep you wanting more, and i believe the second one is due out in jun..uly? anyways if you haven't figured it out, yes i will be reading the second one, probably waiting up until midnight for it to release or whatever just stalk amazon page two days around the release date just pressing refresh, refresh, refresh, refresh i think you get the idea.

Plot twist, and characters that really come to life

Octavian's Undoing - Airicka Phoenix

HOLY WOW, that is quite a book. Alright lets do this!!!

First and foremost: Airicka who is a peach (and i adore her as a person and author) asked if I would would give this an honest review in exchange for an ARC and obviously free copy. And since honesty is the best policy that is all i got for you. Honesty, and what i think are witty remarks but most likely i just think i am funnier than i actually am. So moving on? KAY!

Song Choice: I got a few for you this time, this was quite a big book so it deserves a lot of songs i think. So First off: "All I ask Of You" by Skrillex (ft. Penny), "Bloodstream" by Stateless, and "Hold You In My Arms" by Ray LaMontagne. So there you go, songs that i think can give you just a little inkling about the book.

First thoughts: WHERE TO START? WHERE TO START? This is quite a big book. The plot threw me through a couple hundred loops, it was smartly planned out and deceiving leaving the reader feeling as helpless as the characters. The characters! OH my! Well on top of the fact that the characters themselves were all uniquely written, separate but amazing personalities making you fall for each one of them, they came off the page and really developed into so much more than characters for me.

Plot: HOLY WOW (yup again) anyways! So I pride myself on having this awesome superpower, yes i have a superpower, yes its almost as cool as Superman's, meaning all of his: laser eyes, flying, strength, speed, x-ray vision *raising eyebrows suggestively* anyways! the point is this superpower i have is to guess what will happen, what sort of paranormal we might be dealing with and all that jazz, so pretty much i can figure out a book before the book even knows what its doing. ONLY here is the thing... Airicka (I swear i do adore you) TRICKS ME EVERY FREAKING TIME. everytime and i have officially given up trying to figure it out. so i suggest you do the same, cause when you think you will zag you will zig, and when you think you are going up you are actually doing down. Point is the plot (in my experience) is completely unpredictable in that good way. In the way that you will never stop being interested in this 531 page book of total awesomeness. Though there were points i did notice...how do i explain this... okay do you have like a word that you use to use like all the time? and you always used in papers, conversation, dreams? anyways Dude was that word it was thrown in somewhere around the middle used a bunch then disappeared. There see being honest! Now back to the fact that i really didn't care all that much because i loved this book.

ANYWAYS! I loved that certain things happened that were life-changing and it wasn't treated like it was no big deal. It was treated with the respect that was due, it was dealt with and not brushed over which happens a lot in books i know to keep things going and what nots but here is the thing Airicka managed to deal with stuff (can't say what) while also keeping the plot going. Is this a big book? Yup! Is it worth it? Yup! Does the pace of the plot remain fantastic? YUP! YUP! YUP!

Oh so! Also this is a big girl book as i like to call them. There are grow up moments in here. And I totally forgot to talk to the sexy parts, they were so spot on the scenes never felt forced, or out of the blue, or like i don't know how to say this right so i will try my best... its not overtly descriptive where the plot becomes about the sex, but its there enough you might need the AC on with a fan in front of you as well. In the cheesiest way possible to say this, its more about moving love than having sex.

Characters!

*oh i am excited about this. Usually I just do the MC girl and guy but this time...oh no.. i got to talk about the brothers!*

Riley: What a sweetheart! She is loyal to a fault to her father who is her only remaining parent as her mother left them. She has been taking care of her father and herself since she was about 5 years old. She is self-reliant but more than that she still understands the value of a dollar, but she is not so jaded that that she is willing to steal when finding a wallet stuffed with cash, some more cash, and credit cards, and some more cash and a convenient business card everything changes. Riley gets a fantastic job and meets the soon to be love her life. She really does deserve happiness but things aren't fair in life, and things don't come easily. Riley is strong though and she makes it through so much without becoming that girl, the one that needs someone to protect her, while she understands that she is not sometimes in position to save herself she does understand that. But she does do her best to stand up herself. She is amazing because she is so real for me. She is not a one-sided character that is accepting and happy go lucky. She fights with Octavian, she is funny, she is charming, she can be very sexy when need be ;). She is a multidimensional character.

Octavian: I know you are all just shaking with excitement to learn about him/read my thoughts about him. So Riley notice how i mentioned she was a multidimensional character well so is Octavian. When we first meet him he is rude, an ass, and overall grumpy! I thought we might be dealing with a brooding male lead, which don't get me wrong we all go through that phase, some girls dig that sort of thing. Me? Well i like my guy to do more than stare at me from across the bar giving any guy to looks at me the evil eye. I want him to be there with me, holding me close, messing around with me. While Octavian is very serious at first he grows into so much more. While he is fiercely protective of Riley, and his family he does have a sense of humor most of the time ;). He is loving and full of passion. He is one of those rare male leads that actually seems to have somewhat of self control which is shocking, and the fact that he does resist and thinks of Riley makes him all around swoon worthy. But not only is he emotionally awesome. Well physically...yum. Anyways when we finally get his POV, wow just wow, i loved him even more. I like reading in the guys POVs because it gives you so much more in-depth look at them. It worked amazing well for this. And his voice was separate from Riley's which was awesome all on its own.

The brothers! oh i am excited!

Gideon: Now he was my first love of the brothers. I love his humor, he is very suggestive and funny about it. He is sexy and also oh so dangerous. Though he honestly to me felt like the biggest mystery to be solved out of the brothers. While his twin Magnus has secrets to he seemed a bit more of an open book to me than Gideon. There is a lot about Gideon that i feel is not being said, there is a lot we have yet to learn and i am UNBELIEVABLY excited to read his story which is next btws. Gideon was, wow. He made me want to blush, giggle like a school girl, and all of the things in between.

Raggie: He was the little humorous brother in the beginning. He felt like the playful one the one that was always easy to be around. But like all of Airicka's characters in this book there was more to him. He started to change farther and farther into the book, he became more distant and more serious. He is dangerously protective but understandably so. He is scared but also more than that. but i can't say what.

Magnus: NOW he at first was more of an ass than Octavian, he doesn't really start to come forward til a little bit farther into the book like the other brothers who really start to shine right off the bat. He is crude, blunt and plain out a straight up asshole. Who actually became one of my favorite brothers. He shows compassion in a different way and once you figure it out you will see how much he really does care. While i don't understand his hatred from certain creatures, i am looking forward to learning more about him. He promises to be a very interesting character i am sure.

Octavian's parents: LOVED THEM they were sweet, especially his mother, goodness i want to give her a hug!

Kay the villains, dangerous and scary, i feel like we will be more and more of them later but since this was a first in the series this a lot of introducing which was fine cause it was done well and interesting.

The Ending: UM...not technically a cliffie but I am definitely aching for more.

That is all folks! Once again thank you Airicka this was a huge honor for me :)
